Communal Laboratory Membership and Specialist Laboratory Equipment

 

These facilities are available to all companies located on the Campus, however those who are not part of the Bioincubator are required to be a member of the Communal Laboratory in order to access any of the services. Those Companies who are Non-BBT Tenants will also be required to pay a returnable deposit. This includes all subtenants of BBT Tenants or companies external to the Campus. To access any of the following services or modify your current agreement you are required to complete a Communal laboratory or specialist laboratory equipment request form.

 

Containment 1 Communal Laboratory

A fully fitted and managed laboratory containing scientific equipment for tenants and virtual companies to use. The laboratory can be accessed via the Basic membership available to Bioincubator tenants only; Communal laboratory membership; Bench Space User or specifically for one of the Specialist pieces of laboratory equipment.

​Only research can be conducted on biological agents up to a hazard group 1 or the use of genetically modified organisms at containment level 1. All works will go through BBT's notification of intention to use premises for genetic modification (CU1), premises code 3006. Anyone wishing to use the containment 1 laboratory is required to provide a suitable and sufficient risk assessment which covers all works in advance of wishing to conduct works for the first time and ensure it remains up to date.

 

Containment 2 and Schedule 5 Compliant Laboratory

A secure fully fitted and managed laboratory containing scientific equipment for tenants and virtual companies to use at an ACDP/GMO containment level 2. The laboratory allows research with scheduled toxins and pathogens that are controlled under The Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001. ​

The laboratory can only be accessed as a Bench Space User and due to the nature of the work conducted within the laboratory access is restricted to those with an absolute requirement to work at containment level 2. All staff must be take part in an on-going health surveillance regime. BBT also recommends all staff receive a Hepatitis B vaccination prior to commencing work.

Research can be conducted on biological agents up to a hazard group 2 under BBT's (CBA1.3006.12.1) first use of hazard group 2 or the use of genetically modified organisms at containment level 1. All works will go through BBT's notification of intention to use premises for genetic modification (CU1), premises code 3006. The use of genetically modified organisms at containment level 2 is possible in this laboratory however it is the company's responsibility to apply for a CU2 notification from the HSE in advance in liaison with the Campus Biosafety Committee. Anyone wishing to use the containment 2 laboratory is required to provide a suitable and sufficient risk assessment covering all works in advance of wishing to commence for the first time and provide an approved CU2 notification. You will also be required to provide regular project updates to the Biosafety Committee.
